One of the kids I help after school showed me this drawing that his teacher showed him. After seeing him draw it in front of me, I know I will never forget the relationship between Gallons, Quarts, Pints, and Cups ever again.

There was something powerful about watching him draw the picture for me, which is why I have the video, and not just an image.
When I googled it, there are a few good image hits (so it must be a common thing). I just had never seen it.
Continuous Everywhere but Differentiable Nowhere

I saw that at a conference last year and had the same reaction as you. When I did more research, I also found this illustration which may work well with younger students:
I’m still going to forget (how many C’s do I put inside again…?), but if your school ever does a fundraiser, sign me up for a magnet with that picture for my fridge.
The kids taught me that during my first year of teaching (we called it “The Big G”). It’s the only way I can keep the measurements straight!
One of my students, a fifth grader, showed this to me a couple months ago. I think it makes more sense than anything I’ve ever seen about teaching unit conversions! She LOVES drawing it and calls it “Gallon Man.” I’m glad the word is spreading!
Hey, maybe my Canadian brain will actually remember this! Since, you know, we don’t spend a lot of time bothering with this non-metric weirdness, but then I keep hearing measurements in it anyway from you peoples on the non-metric side of the border.
